Frequently asked questions
Which format should I choose?
MP3 plays everywhere and is the safe choice. M4A gives slightly better quality at the same size. WAV and FLAC keep the sound without loss (WAV is large, FLAC about half that). OGG uses the modern Opus codec.
What bitrate should I choose?
192 kbps MP3 sounds good for music and speech. Use 320 kbps if you want the best MP3 quality, or 128 kbps for a smaller file. Lower bitrates are fine for voice recordings.
Does converting lose quality?
Converting to MP3, M4A or OGG is lossy but at these bitrates the difference is hard to hear. Converting to WAV or FLAC does not lose anything more, but it cannot restore quality an MP3 has already lost.
